Do solar panels really need cleaning, or does rain take care of it?

A very common doubt.

Rain provides good natural rinsing in moderate climates, but it often leaves residues, streaks, or doesn't remove heavier build up like bird droppings, dust storms (common in Australia), or pollen. Dirty panels can lose 10-30% efficiency (sometimes more in harsh conditions), so proactive cleaning boosts output and ROI, especially since Australia has high solar irradiance.

How often should I clean my solar panels?
This is by far the top question.

In Australia, most sources recommend once or twice a year for typical residential setups, though it varies: more often (e.g., quarterly) in dusty regions, near farms/roads, coastal areas with salt build up, or if panels are flat/low-angle. Rain often helps naturally in wetter areas like parts of Victoria, but stubborn soiling (bird droppings, pollen, dust) may require extra cleans. Many pros suggest monitoring output—if production drops noticeably, it's time to clean.

Does dirty build up really affect my energy production and savings?
Yes—frequent concern.

Soiling reduces efficiency significantly in Australia's dry/dusty environments, directly cutting bill savings and feed-in credits.

Should I get a professional inspection/maintenance along with cleaning?
Increasingly asked:

Yes, many bundle cleaning with visual/thermal checks, inverter tests, and minor fixes. Australian guidelines (e.g., Clean Energy Council) suggest professional servicing every 1-2 years to catch issues early and maintain warranties/compliance.

Do solar batteries need cleaning, and how?
Similar to panels—yes but externally only.

Wipe dust off the exterior with a soft cloth if needed; keep vents clear for cooling.

Never use water inside or harsh cleaners—units are sealed.
